In this world of the walking dead, it is sometimes more shocking to run across someone who is alive amid all of this horror and chaos. It was very much that way when I was scrambling through some old buildings in the middle of the city and just ran across this sweet-looking kid wearing one of those zombie t-shirts you would see the kids wearing back in the day. Those days are long gone, though. Now there's just survival, and it was probably not the wisest move to team up with someone when I could barely take care of myself.
It's really hard to trust strangers out here, especially within the city. I'm not sure what it's like outside of the city. Perhaps one day I would have had enough to get out and see if there really are compounds out there that are safe. I know I didn't look like a threat, though. I have a mild face and I was pretty thin from not having eaten much for a couple of weeks. I guess the kid in the zombie t-shirts thought I looked safe enough, because he teamed up with me and led me through some pretty concealed back ways. The walkers had swarmed this area pretty bad, but the food had been scavenged out of here long ago.
My own reserves were extremely low, so the little bit of water that I had to share didn't go far between us. I had a couple of stale crackers in my pack, and we split those too. The kid in the zombie t-shirts immediately made himself useful and showed me where a broken water pipe was protruding from the side of a building. It must have led directly to the source, because the water from it was cold, pure, and unending. I might have been hungry, but the fresh water was a treat. The kid told me that he knew where there was some food that hadn't been scavenged yet. The place he was taking me was swarmed over really bad, but he knew a side route that would take us to a safe place.
Because of how slow it takes to move around in parts of the city that are literally crawling with undead, it took us a very impatient two days to reach the place the kid with the zombie t-shirts was taking me to. We still had water, but in my weakened condition I was constantly exhausted. We rounded a corner, and there it was. A business intersection with two untouched gas stations and a pharmacy. You could see that all three were untouched, but there were zombies everywhere and in all directions. Getting to any of them in the open would be suicide, but the kid said he knew a way. I trusted him.
He told me to follow him, and I did willingly. Anything to get to that precious food. We raced between two buildings, and then two more. It was far too fast, but I had to believe the boy knew what he was doing. He had a plan. He was the one that was well-fed, so he had to know what he was doing. Even though the zombies had noticed us and were slowly closing in, I had faith...and then he tripped me. I went down hard, and I realized that my ankle was shattered. I wasn't going anywhere. Now I watch the zombies close in, and the boy with the zombie t-shirt's plan became all too clear. He would have plenty of time to forage while the swarm was busy feeding.
